The school received an overwhelming amount of opt out forms a week prior to the time the smarter balance test was supposed to be implemented. Because of this, the test has been pushed back until further notice so that students may receive all the available information regarding Smarter Balance testing. Currently the district is trying to receive a wavier that allows the state to use LOSD’s student’s ACT, SAT, or AP scores as an assessment in place of Smarter Balance. The wavier has not been received yet, so LOSD is still obligated to use smarter balance as the assessment. Students who have opted out are allowed to send in their SAT or ACT scores. The only caveat is that Oregon students must pass a recognized Oregon writing sample in order to graduate, however, starting in March the SAT is abandoning the essay portion of the test. Students will not receive smarter balance credit in this area if they are submitting the new SAT or ACT, unless they pay the extra $17.00 to receive the essay portion.
