The Lake Oswego boys water polo team has had a strong start to the year, and expect to keep it going. The team lost a lot of talent, especially in captains Ben Rabbino and Myles Williams, coming into this year. The three new captains, Ty Davis, Josh Lucas and Hayden Mills look to fill those shoes. When asked what is the hardest part about stepping in and becoming the new leaders, Lucas said, “It is a lot of pressure because you have to set an example for younger kids. You have to have good work ethic and you have to show them what it is like to play varsity water polo.”
The team has started 3-0 this year, with stellar performances against Lincoln, Westview and Sunset. This is fitting because the captains said their expectations this year are plain and simple, “We want to make it past the first round of playoffs and play in the state tournament.” Lucas followed this up by saying, “We haven’t made it to state in a long time.”
Some other members of the team that are expected to step up are: seniors, Doug Moring, Chris Hofmann; sophomores Max Spurr and Lincoln Buckner; and freshman Hudson Schneider and Giovanni Carlo Cremona. Doug Moring, who plays shallow end goalie, says, “It is definitely a step up… There’s not much else to it, more is expected of you,” he says about making the jump from JV to Varsity. “Better room= less room for error. So far, I feel really confident with our group, we feel like we can compete with anyone. ”
After two weeks of no regular season games, Boys Water Polo returns to the pool tonight against Newberg. Go and support your fellow Lakers!
