City League: New guidelines, new fun
February 21, 2022
After a two year pause, City League Basketball is more than halfway through the season,
and players have had a taste of the 2021-2022 City League season experience. Many players feel
that the Lake Oswego City League fosters a community within Lake Oswego, “I think it’s nice
that it’s just Lakeridge and LO, cause you know most people, versus just playing against random
people might be less fun.” says junior Matthew McAuliffe.
All teams are self-run and excited about the current season. When asked about the
dynamic compared to years past, senior Karoline Shipton said, “people are a lot more hyped this
season after the long break.” The program has seen a dramatic increase in registered players
compared to years past, prompting a much more competitive season among teams. There are
more than two dozen teams between LO and Lakeridge combined.
Due to an increase in Covid-19 cases, there are no spectators allowed during the games.
Player Matthew McAuliffe said,“it’s a little bit less exciting as you don’t get to play in front of
everyone.” Senior Tucker Deville agreed, saying, “it feels a little weird as we aren’t used to not
having friends yelling on the sideline but it was definitely still fun, just a lot more quiet.”
However, Shipton said, “playing with no fans is better because there is less interference and
distractions on the court.”
While the season has mostly kicked off in a positive spotlight, there have been a few
setbacks regarding sportsmanship and following adequate safety guidelines. Shipton said, “in
one of our games, some spectators from the opposing team got kicked out. It ended up being just
really distracting.” Senior Stephanie Ray also said,“almost all of the teams don’t wear their
masks on the bench or only wear them under their noses.”
Even though there have been a few minor setbacks, players are still looking forward to
ending the season with a win in their hearts.
