Last month was September, and the month was designated to spreading mental health awareness, specifically for suicide prevention. Suicide prevention month first started in 2008. During the month, mental health organizations, survivors and other advocates promoted the cause by sharing their stories, sharing crucial information and ensuring that citizens feel less alone. The month was a great way to learn about the causes, warning signs, and statistics regarding suicide. According to the CDC, 41,000 people on average die due to suicide, being the leading cause of death among adults in the US, and the second leading cause among people ages 10-24. Advocates of the month believe it is important to be informed about suicide in order to take control of and combat the issue. LOHS is extremely lucky to have great administrators and counselors that are well educated and trained in terms of mental health, and willing to help students with any concern.
