For years, off-campus lunch has been an unfulfilled promise at LOHS. The off-campus policy promised by ASB President Jeb Scipo del Campo was meant to allow students to leave campus for lunch instead of staying on school grounds. This was supposed to happen for a while now, but this promised policy never came to be, upsetting and angering many students, while others could not care at all.
”Many students are upset. I genuinely couldn’t care less” says senior Rowan Nirula ”It’s a good idea in theory but where are people realistically going to go eat with the short amount of time we have for lunch? We don’t have many quick food areas to go to at that time and Little Big Burger would just get backed up.”Even though students aren’t allowed to go off-campus for lunch, students still end up doing it because the school doesn’t enforce off-campus lunch enough. “I’ve almost gotten crew time for leaving campus during lunch,” said senior Logan Fonger.
While many students are still holding out hope for this policy to happen, I have my doubts that it never will. One of the main reasons I believe off-campus lunch will never happen is because the school would be held responsible for any type of accident or incident that happens during lunch, such as a student getting into a car accident or something else happening. This is because the time the accident occurred would still be during school hours and the blame would technically fall towards the school.
Another reason I believe off-campus lunch won’t happen is because the school would no longer have supervision on all students during lunch. Our administration is tightening the reins on the attendance and tardy policy but in the grand scheme of things it really isn’t going that well.
While there would be many negatives to off-campus lunch, there would also be many positives. A problem that is occurring right now in school is students ordering lunch from other places such as McDonald’s and other fast food places, but their food ends up arriving too late and they can’t get it until the end of the day. If students could go off-campus for lunch, this problem would disappear from school. Off campus lunch seems like something that is out of reach at LOHS from all the problems that could arise and how tight the administration is getting on attendance. I can only see off campus lunch as a slowly fading dream.
