The LOHS Senate is an opportunity for people across all grades to get involved with school events and activities. Each advisory class elects one senator, who then attends every Senate meeting and relates information back to the class. Senate meetings take place during Support Seminar and occur about once a month. They are valuable chances for students to not only learn about school-wide information but also meet with class officers, who are present at each meeting, about class-specific events.
ASB Vice President Noah Ha, who runs the Senate meetings, shared, “Senators get to hear about events, activities, and spirit days.” He continued, “In the Senate, [students] have the opportunity to pass bills to make change in our school.” Even though only one bill was passed last year, Ha said, “If a group of students is really motivated, they can get a bill passed.”
Another aspect of Senate meetings is club approval. The first Senate meeting of the year was held on September 17, and approximately 85 clubs were approved, with five more awaiting approval at the next meeting. Senior Sophie Howard, who holds the ASB Clubs and Committees position, said that “Meetings help the Senate stay updated on the offerings we have at our school so that events and groups are well known by the student body.”
Although the first Senate meeting has already passed, Howard stated, “You can approve a club at any Senate meeting.” In addition to Senate meetings, clubs can gain publicity through the new LOHS Clubs Instagram account, which is dedicated to posting about clubs and their activities.
For people with or without the time outside of school to participate in clubs, the LOHS Senate provides a chance for all students, regardless of their grade level, to get involved in school activities. It allows students to share their input and thoughts to make change at LOHS.
