Volleyball season is officially here, and the LOHS girls volleyball team is ready to partake in the fun that this season brings.
The team has played a plethora of teams so far, with out of league games consisting of Lincoln, Southridge,Wilsonville, South Albany, Summit,Caldera, and Grants Pass. For the non league games the team won against Lincoln, Southridge, and Grants Pass. On the other hand, the league games have been Tualatin,Oregon City, Tigard,St. Mary’s Academy, West Linn, and Lakeridge. For the league games the Lakers won against Tualatin and Lakeridge.
Overall the team is working their way through the season with big goals. Sophomore Gabi Wallen spoke about the improvement over the last year: “We’ve already beaten teams that we didn’t beat last season. We are working really well together and it makes me look forward for the years to come.”
Volleyball’s last scheduled game is October 24 against West Linn, but the team is hoping that’s not the last game of the season. “Our team goal this year is to make it to playoffs,” said Senior Emily Kitchin.
Wallen said the game that the team performed the best at was Oregon City, explaining, “[We] played best in our game against Oregon City. I believe that when we play teams that are more advanced and smart within the game, we play up to their level. Oregon City is a very skilled team.” She also mentioned how the team was reacting and reading Oregon City’s hitting techniques well.
Another memorable game for the team was Lakeridge, also known to be the team’s biggest rival. Kitchin said she believes this was the team’s best game: “The LO team has not beat Lakeridge in about three years, so we were very excited to try to win, and we did! It was a very exciting game because the energy in the gym was so fun!” When the Lakers play Lakeridge again, make sure to tune in. “I’m sure they are ready for a rematch, so our next game against them should be fun,” said Kitchin.
Lakers girls volleyball isn’t only going great on the court but also off the court by creating great bonds within their team. “Our chemistry is way more consistent and our love and energy for the sport is evident on the court,” said Wallen.
