Exchange student: Maria Fernandez Duran
Q: Where are you from?
A: Barcelona, Spain
Q: What was your decision process in coming to Lake Oswego as an exchange student?
A: I looked for a lot of American families that would like me to host in and the one that I liked the best was the Daniels’.
Q: Is Lake Oswego similar to (Barcelona)? Is it different?
A: It’s different in many ways; in [American] school, you have to go to the teacher’s class in every period, while in Spain you stay in the same classroom all day and teachers rotate. And you have more periods every day and have school lunch in the cafeteria with everyone sitting [together at] the table.
Q: Which classes are your favorites?
A: My favorite class is Intro to Chem because we do lots of “dynamic labs.”
Q: What are your interests/hobbies?
A: I love doing almost all sports: cross country, basketball and sailing are my favourites. I tried Cross Country for the first time this year and I loved it. I have been on my school basketball team since I was seven and I’ve sailed…[for] the last five years. I sail on the Mediterranean Sea. Another thing that I love to do is cook and bake.
Q: What’s something you want us to know about you?
A: I really like meeting new people and learning things from them. Don’t be shy to come and talk to me! I would also like you to know that travelling (out of your country or not) is a great way to…learn from those foreign cultures and people. You will never know someone if you don’t take the first step to go and talk to them, and maybe you’ll learn awesome things. I also want to thank all the people who have been nice and friendly to me these first days and made my welcome way better and more comfortable.
