Laker football makes quarterfinals
After a successful regular season for the Lakers football team, they are now in the Quarterfinals of the state playoffs. The Lakers, who finished with a 8-2 regular season record and a league record of 4-2, losing to Tigard and Tualatin. In the first round of the playoffs, the #3 Lakers hosted #30 Grants Pass on Friday Nov. 8, winning 55-33. In the win, senior and Stanford commit Casey Filkins carried the team offensively, as he ran for 264 yards and four touchdowns, along with throwing a Touchdown pass. As a team, the Lakers rushed for 467 yards and finished with 551 yards in total offense, with Filkins accounting for 264 yards on the ground, and sophomore Gabe Olvera running for 157 yards on 12 carries. The first round win set up a second round face-off at home against #19 West Salem, who upset #14 Sunset on the road, winning 28-14.
In week one of the regular season, the Lakers traveled to West Salem to kick off the season. The Lakers had no trouble putting away the Titans, winning 42-21 thanks to senior Casey Filkins running for three touchdowns. On defense, junior Malcolm Williams intercepted three passes in the first half to stop the Titans offense. However, in the rematch, the Lakers struggled in the first half. After the end of the first half, they found themselves down 21-14, which is not something that the Lakers have been familiar with this year. In the second half, the gap increased to 28-14, but the Lakers never stopped fighting. All the determination paid off, as the Lakers eventually won the game 41-32.
Filkins rushed for five touchdowns and also threw a touchdown pass in the victory.
In the second round, #22 Lakeridge upset #6 Aloha 51-40. However, the biggest upset was #16 Mountainside pulling off a huge upset on the road against #1 Tigard, winning 34-31 in overtime thriller. This sets up a quarterfinal featuring a Civil War rematch on Friday, Nov. 22 at home at 7 p.m. Go show up to the game against our in-town rivals, as it will be the last home game of the season!
