Laker Football Continues Strong Start To Season as they Shutout South Salem

Owen Alles, Sports Editor

After beating Barlow 20-8 in Week One, the Laker football team hoped to continue their winning ways on the road against the West Salem Titans. West Salem started the season off with a 31-14 loss to Sherwood and hoped to bounce back against the Lakers. This didn’t come to fruition. The Lake Oswego defense dominated once again, keeping West Salem out of the scoring column altogether en route to a 14-0 win.

The Lakers defense was steady the entire game and, despite not recording a sack, had no shortage of impact plays. Senior Owen West had the only takeaway of the game, recording an interception despite having one hand entirely wrapped up due to injury. Senior Jack Knapp was once again all over the field for the Lakers, recording seven total tackles including three for loss. Sophomore Lusiano Lopez also made a number of plays over the course of the game, recording seven total tackles of his own. Sophomore Oliver Macy and junior Tobia Tagliabue made their presence known as well, each recording a tackle for loss.

Offensively, the Lakers were led by junior Colin Best. Best hauled in six receptions and turned them into 94 yards and a touchdown. He was junior quarterback Max Brauner’s favorite target all game long. Brauner himself had a solid game as well, completing 18 of 32 passes for 163 yards and two touchdowns and only one interception. Other offensive playmakers included senior Henry Smith who was on the receiving end of Brauner’s other touchdown pass and senior Calvin Macy who led the team in rushing with 10 carries for 44 yards.

The Lakers turned in yet another steady performance in Week 2 to improve to 2-0 on the year. They now turn their focus towards their Week 3 opponent, the Mountainside Mavericks. Currently ranked ninth on the OSAA leaderboard, the Mavericks will certainly be the toughest task that the Lakers have faced yet.
