Ever since artificial intelligence began rolling out in 2022, it has created multiple disasters within the technology industry. As it stands now, AI has created a shortage of a key device component called Random-Access Memory (RAM), a core part for many kinds of electronics, including computers, phones, tablets, smart watches, gaming consoles, virtual reality headsets and other devices that are RAM-dependent.
The reason RAM is in high demand is because of its function. RAM acts as a temporary data processor for the device until its information has been saved to a hard drive, used especially for computer systems. This allows the computer to effectively multitask, boosting speed for other functions in the machine, like the CPU, to reduce slowing or otherwise “lagging”. RAM also allows users to run multiple applications at once, such as having internet browser tabs open simultaneously.
The reason AI consumes so much RAM is understandable. Artificial intelligence relies on using RAM because of the data processing it requires. Every chat, question or image a user requests needs to process the data fast and efficiently, which is exactly what RAM is used for. AI also uses RAM for its training, bandwidth and a multitude of other essential functions required for the AI to work properly.
The impact of this shortage on the electronic market is significant. With RAM being purchased in large quantities by major AI companies, prices have driven up for the RAM component as well as the electronics that require them. This also affects the quantity and availability of the product for purchase, making them as scarce as they are expensive. Just last year, the Xbox series X increased their price twice in the one year. Once from $499 to $599 in May, and the other from $599 to $649 in early October. Similar trends have occurred with other consoles and devices alike.
Looking ahead, it is likely that the cost of other consoles and electronic devices will continue to rise. Devices like iPhones, Airpods and MacBooks, which are widely used by students and faculty all across the country, will be harder to purchase because of their inevitable price increase. As a result, jobs that require desktop devices to operate, such as an office job, will be affected due to limited availability.
As the technology industry continues to focus on the advancements of AI, the demand for RAM will only continue to increase substantially, driving up prices and limiting availability. While increases in price may only be the beginning, it will eventually lead to RAM and RAM-dependent devices becoming almost economically unobtainable.
