Laker football goes on a crusade to defend their state title
The Lake Oswego Football team has gotten off to a red hot start in 2019. In their first game of the season, the Lakers went on the road to face West Salem. Senior Casey Filkins was able to run for three touchdowns as he led the Lakers to victory, 42-14. The new transfer quarterback junior J.J. Woodin also had a good debut in his first game as a Laker. But what carried the Lakers to the win was the defense, giving up 0 points in the second half with junior Malcolm Williams getting three interceptions on the defensive side of play.
The Lakers followed that up by hosting rival Jesuit at home. The students showed out in that one as it was a “Lights Out” game. Again, Filkins came to play as he ran for 228 yards and four touchdowns to carry the Lakers to a 44-41 victory. Filkins, who was bombarded by reporters at the end of the game, said “The attention is cool but that’s not what I do it for. All that matters to me is what the score is at the end of the game.” Woodin had another solid game finishing 8 for 14 for 167 yards and two touchdowns. Defensively, the Lakers were anchored by Hutson who had a big time interception midway through the 3rd quarter.
The Lakers lost a lot of talent from last year’s state championship team, and need some people to fill those shoes. Some of the players expected to step up are Malcolm Williams, Jonas Hunter, Gabe Olvera, Ty Miller, Austin Leykam and Julian Lopez. The Lakers have two tough opponents ahead as the play at Tigard, and then Homecoming game vs Clackamas. This year should be exciting on the field!
