The city of Lake Oswego is partnering with Habitat for Humanity, a global nonprofit organization and Hacienda Community Development Corporation (CDC), to build numerous affordable housing units. This operation is expected to start being constructed in June of this year and be completed in the spring of 2026. These developments will primarily be built in the Lake Grove area.
Clackamas County approved the construction and funding that Hacienda CDC proposed in 2023. This was in response to the need for affordable housing, especially in a town as expensive as Lake Oswego.
The vision of one of the buildings being made in Lake Grove consists of a three story apartment complex with 55 subsidized housing units. Ten of these units will be a part of the Permanent Supportive Housing with many resources available that are specifically beneficial to low-income communities, people of color and those experiencing displacement because of current economic and political conditions. Twenty of the 55 homes will be restricted to people with 30% of the Area Median Income (AMI). The rest of the apartments are for individuals and families earning 60% or less of the median income.
In the West Lake Grove area, Portland’s Habitat for Humanity branch is managing the creation of 23 affordable housing units— split between buyers’ income. Twelve of them will be designed for people in the 60-80% Area Median Income with the remaining 11 homes for buyers with 35-60% below the AMI. However, the house payment will vary slightly between individuals. The qualification needed being that buyers can afford to pay said price without financial strain classified as spending over 34% of their income.
These future home opportunities hope to be an accessible, secure and beneficial community for underserved groups. All of the homes built are meant to last and consistently be low-income conscious. The construction of these spaces is already underway, so expect to see the new additions to Lake Oswego soon. Both Hacienda CDC and Habitat for Humanity (as well as other businesses working for the same cause) plan to continue the commitment to affordable housing and other helpful programs around the region.
