Walking the halls of LOHS recently has been a 15-week-old golden retriever named Walter! Walter is the beloved puppy that our Athletic Director and Assistant Principal Chris Coleman takes to school with him every day. Since Coleman’s wife works from home with his older lab, he has been bringing Walter to school to help socialize him and keep him company. Luckily for Walter, he gets lots of pets and tummy rubs from many different students in our school. You may see Walter during lunch, passing periods or while he’s taking a nap in the office!
Having a young puppy at school has had a large impact on the students at LOHS. Seeing Walter has brightened students’ days and put a smile on their faces. “I’ll be hanging out in the hallway with him, and a student may be walking down the hall by themselves, and all of a sudden they see Walter and get a big smile across their face,” Coleman said. When a kid is having a bad day, or even a good day, it makes Coleman happy to see Walter raising students’ moods.
You might be wondering, “How does Walter get walked, fed, and let outside while he is at school all day?” Luckily for Walter, he has several people at school willing to help take care of him. Coleman feeds Walter in the morning when he wakes up, then around 1 p.m. in the early afternoon and finally when he gets home from school. Walter gets walks from many people who offer to take him with them throughout the day, like DAs delivering passes and other office staff. Coleman appreciates all of the people who help take care of Walter. “It is a village that keeps an eye out for him,” he said.
If you’re ever having a bad day, are stressed after a test or love spending time with dogs, keep an eye out for Walter during lunch and TSCT!
