Recently, Roblox CEO David Baszucki pushed a new facial identification update to the platform for all users. In order to access any of the chat features across the website and app, you are required to let their AI take a scan of your face to categorize you into an age group that they deem appropriate for your facial structure. Not only is this a gross violation of personal privacy for the users, but it also asks minors of any age to take photos of themselves to send to the Roblox AI. COPPA law requires online platforms such as Roblox to collect information on users who are under 13, which is something many people are concerned about in terms of personal private information. This new update was added in the pretense of “child safety,” as Roblox is known to have had problems with this in the past. One of the largest examples of this is a type of game known as “condo games,” which directly breaks the terms of service by allowing players to e-date and perform inappropriate acts with one another. This update has seen a lot of backlash from the community, as it directly restricts the ability to chat with other players, but it also makes the game generally less sociable and interactive for the majority of players who had nothing to do with the targeted audience.
