Released on Netflix on Dec. 23, Rian Johnson’s newest movie, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” has become a smash hit. Grossing $15 million during its one week theatrical release, “Glass Onion” has become the third most watched movie on Netflix. “I was engrossed in the movie from the very beginning, with the puzzle boxes to the last lines from Benoit Blanc. I laughed, gasped, and cheered with the characters. I had a lot of fun watching it,” stated senior Sachal Shaikh.

Personally,  I absolutely adored this movie. I thought that the characters were fascinating. The set was absolutely gorgeous, and the storyline was incredible. It’s very quickly becoming one of my favorite movies.

Following Detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) in his second appearance, “Glass Onion” took viewers to an eccentric billionaire’s private Greek island. The movie is set during the summer of 2020, masks and all. Opening with a fascinating puzzle box scene, viewers are introduced to all the characters and their personalities. Working together to solve the puzzles, viewers begin to understand the dynamic between all the characters. We find out that all of them have been invited to a weekend getaway on their friend, Miles Brohn’s (Edward Norton) private island. Detective Blanc is the last person in this sequence to receive the box.

Next, the movie jumps into a scene in which all the characters meet on a dock to take a boat to the island. Detective Blanc is the first person we see, sporting an extremely coordinated outfit with a facemask that matches. Scientist Lionel Toussaint (Leslie Odom Jr.) is seen next wearing a very fashionable outfit, and sporting a KN95 mask. Claire Debella (Kathryn Hahn), an overworked politician, is the next person to arrive. She sports an entirely beige outfit, and her mask is consistently falling down, despite being able to be tightened. The next to arrive is fashion model Birdie Jay (Kate Hudson) who is wearing a gold, chain linked and rhinestone studded mask. Finally, Duke Cody (Dave Bautista) and his girlfriend, Whiskey (Madeline Cline) arrive maskless. “I’ve seen a few movies that acknowledge Covid and all the weird things about it, but “Glass Onion” did it in a very witty and enjoyable way,” said Shaikh.

Upon arrival to the island, we meet Miles Bron, the eccentric billionaire who amassed his wealth through starting an international tech giant with his best friend, Andi Brand (Janelle Monae). Miles is immediately recognized as a culmination of current billionaires. He is immediately seen as an overall terrible person when the character drops the guitar Paul McCartney wrote the song “Blackbird” on. Furthermore, initially, the character seems like an absolute genius.

Overall, the movie was absolutely incredible. Many critics liked Glass Onion more than Johnson’s last whodunnit film, Knives Out. I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who loves murder-mysteries, or eccentric billionaires. Viewers are very excited for Rian Johnson’s next venture, Poker Face, starring Natasha Lyonne.
