The Laker Softball team is off to a strong start to their season with an outstanding record of 10-2 in preseason play, going undefeated for their first eight games. The girls Varsity team has been taking names and dominating. They had six shut out games, three of which were in the North Eugene Tournament that they won after defeating North Eugene in the championship game. They started league play on Apr. 15 with a win at Tigard.
Junior Avery Cavagnaro and Sophomore Sloane Morris commented about their experiences this year on the Varsity softball team. Cavagnaro’s favorite part about being on the team is “the bond that we have created on our team” because it helps with being able to trust each other on the field to get the job done. Similarly, Morris loves “the team environment the most. Some of us have played club together and other sports together that makes our team chemistry great. We also always build each other up and have built great friendships over each season.” Both of them are excited for league play and the competition that the TRL offers, as they will be able to challenge themselves and battle against some of the top teams in the state. More specifically, Cavagnaro is looking forward to playing Lakeridge because she “loves it when we beat them.” The Lakers have high hopes for the remainder of the season, hoping to accomplish a long run in the playoffs and host a playoff game, as well as “be top three in our league,” said Morris. The team also prioritizes team culture and building a strong foundation between each other because that’s what contributes to their success on the field. Morris reflected that they grow close on their annual Varsity retreat and in “various team bonding activities,” and Cavagnaro further explained that they go to dinner as a team after every game where they “tell fun stories and learn so much about each other,” strengthening their team chemistry and dynamic.
Overall, the team is on the up and looking to continue their success streak. Their next game is at Lakeridge on Apr. 29, so go show support and watch as they battle to take down the Pacers for a second time this season.
