Each year, the MLB opening day is a fresh start and an amazing arrival of America’s favorite sport, with high hopes for a good season filling the seats. On this year’s opening day, there was another change, in the form of the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) challenge system, which offers the ability to challenge a questionable call from the umpire. The ABS is meant to challenge the work of regular umpires in deciding whether a pitch was either a ball or a strike. In the first day of the season, the challenge system resulted in 299 successful challenges out of 542 attempts. The batters had a 50% success rate, and the fielders had a 60% success rate. Both teams start each game with two challenges, and if they win the challenge they keep it, but if they lose the challenge, then they lose one.
Though the era of modern technology continues to improve and change the game of baseball, Opening Day is a special day with everyone watching the game. All teams begin from scratch and hope to create a wonderful season with the end result of a World Series championship. People also get to witness the changes in the lineup, rookie debuts and new coaches.
This past opening day, there were obvious teams ready for their first game compared to others. The New York Yankees defeated the San Francisco Giants in a highly viewed and anticipated game. On the beautiful day, some standout winners were the Mets, Brewers, Nationals, Orioles, Red Sox, Tigers, Phillies, Angels, Dodgers, Cardinals and Guardians. On the other side, the teams that lost their very first game of the season were the Pirates, White Sox, Cubs, Twins, Reds, Rangers, Astros, Rays, Diamondbacks, Mariners and others. For the other teams, they did not play in any games on Opening Day, but rather during the week, all before Mar. 27, due to the staggered schedule of opening games of the 2026 MLB season.
