It’s April and for golf fans it is the most exciting time of the year. The iconic Masters tournament at Augusta National Golf club in Georgia began on April 11 and lasted until April 14. Although it is usually a toss up going into the tournament on who will win, it is always an exciting finish, and this year proved no different.
Starting the first two days off strong, Justin Rose was looking unstoppable. Rose has struggled in recent years, with his last and only major championship win coming from the 2013 U.S. Open, but he looked poised to win his first green jacket. At the end of the second day, Rose had a commanding lead of five strokes with Rory Mcllroy and Bryson Dechambeau in second and third, respectively. Round three was where everything seemed to fall apart for Rose. He had an extremely tough round and ended up scoring a 75 which was three over par. This set him back greatly and allowed Mcllroy to take a commanding lead with an impressive third round score of 66.
Going into the final day, McIlroy looked to hold onto his five stroke lead and win his first Masters. It was not going to be easy though as Dechambeau, Rose and Ludvig Ã…berg trailed closely behind. It was a difficult round for McIlroy, and after he bogied on hole 18 and Rose earned a par, came down to a playoff hole between the two. Both golfers hit good drives on the hole, but it was the approach shot that separated them. Although Rose landed his ball on the green relatively close to the hole, Mcllroy hit an extremely clutch shot within 3 feet of the hole. After Rose two-putted for his par, Mcllroy only needed to make the 3 footer to win the tournament. He did just that and not only won his first Masters, but also became the sixth golfer to ever complete the grand slam (winning every major tournament). It was a great way to cap off an amazing tournament and a rewarding victory for a golfer that deserves it.
