Don’t support unethical CEOs

If you’ve been on the internet in the past three years, you may have noticed the many boycotts of certain establishments. The owners of Chick-fil-a, the Cathys, regularly donate to anti-LGBTQ+ foundations. The owner of Jimmy John’s hunts endangered animals, like elephants and giraffes, for fun. The list of unethical companies in America goes on and on, but here is a spotlight on some ways that these large corporations seemingly don’t care for the people around them.

Chick-fil-a has remained in the hands of the Cathy family since it was established in 1967. Since then, the owners have continually pushed against same-sex marriage. The current owner, Dan Cathy, openly admits that he does not believe that gay marriage is acceptable. This has been a pattern with the company since 2010. In 2017, the company donated $1.8 million to foundations that oppose gay marriage, promote gay conversion therapy  and condemn LGBTQ+ workers, despite a statement they issued in 2012 saying they would stop.

Jimmy John’s, the infamous sandwich chain, is owned by Jimmy John Liautaud. It was a surprise that his real name is Jimmy John, but the bigger surprise is his hobby of hunting endangered species. Some popular pictures that often resurface on Twitter feature him with the big game he has killed, including an elephant, a leopard and a rhino—all very endangered species. He has even been shown to hunt zebra, wolves, lynx, and buffalo.

Chick-fil-a is still the third biggest fast-food chain in American history, and Jimmy John’s is still number seventeen.

In 2019, it may feel like unethical corporations are closing in around us. Inhumane treatment, unethical owners and immoral companies are everywhere and cannot be avoided entirely because of their affordable prices and convenience. However, the first step to fixing these issues is being aware. Maybe the next time you want to give your support to a company, do a simple google search and inform yourself.
