Six students from the LOHS’ class of 2020 have the chance to become one of 161 Presidential Scholars: seniors Conor Mehaffey, Noah Slobodin, Lance Pancoast, Andrea Yang, Doris Yang and Selena Zhang.

They are candidates for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, established in 1964, “by executive order of the President, to recognize and honor some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating high school seniors,” according to the U.S. Department of Education website. Even becoming a Presidential Scholar nominee is an incredible honor and according to Slobodin, “was based on my GPA and ACT.”

If any of the students become one the 161 winners, according to Slobodin will “get you an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington D.C to meet a bunch of people in the federal government.”

Doris Yang describes the next steps in the process simply as “Essays that I have to do.”
